Established on 27 September 1991, the Diocesan Social Service Society (DSSS), Imphal is a registered non-governmental organization and the official social service and development wing of the Archdiocese of Imphal, registered under the Societies Registration Act (Reg. No. 253/M/SR/1991). DSSS was established in response to the growing socio-economic challenges in Manipur, including poverty, unemployment, limited access to quality education and healthcare, environmental degradation, recurring disasters, and the increasing vulnerability of marginalized communities. The organization was founded to provide a professional, community-based approach to sustainable development, humanitarian assistance, and social transformation.
For over three decades, DSSS has worked across all districts of Manipur, including remote, rural, and conflict-affected areas, serving communities without discrimination based on caste, creed, religion, ethnicity, or gender. The organization believes that sustainable development is achieved through community participation, local leadership, institutional collaboration, and strategic partnerships. By working closely with government departments, civil society organizations, development partners, corporate institutions, and local communities, DSSS designs and implements programmes that respond to emerging social and developmental needs.
DSSS adopts a holistic development approach, focusing on sustainable and climate-smart agriculture, livelihood promotion, fisheries development, education, health and nutrition, women and child empowerment, youth development, disaster preparedness and humanitarian response, peacebuilding, environmental conservation, and social protection. The organization has successfully implemented numerous government-supported and donor-funded initiatives, including MOVCD-NER, PMMSY, and the Chalice Canada Direct Family Funding Sponsorship Programme, benefiting thousands of children, farmers, women, and vulnerable families across Manipur.
DSSS is recognized as a trusted development institution with a strong grassroots presence, transparent governance, and accountable programme management. Committed to building resilient, self-reliant, and peaceful communities, the organization continues to improve lives by promoting inclusive development, strengthening local capacities, fostering social cohesion, and creating sustainable opportunities for the most vulnerable people of Manipur.
